Why Not Stop the Trash at the Source?
Friends of Little Hunting Creek have cleaned up trash in and along the creek every spring since 2001. In 2009, 82 volunteers working at 8 sites picked up 119 bags of trash and recyclables (along with 10 tires and other items).
We could have gone out a few days later and picked up another 119 bags. It is unending and overwhelming. Most of what we pick up is bottles and cans.
Let us start work to implement a law requiring a deposit on all beverage containers, including glass, plastic, and metal bottles and cans for water, alcohol and beer, soft drinks, etc.
Click here for a letter urging Fairfax County's elected representatives to pass a bottle deposit law for Virginia. It was presented to Fairfax County's Delegation to the Virginia General Assembly in a Public Hearing at Fairfax County Government Center on January 9, 2010.
Visit the Container Recycling Institute for all sorts of facts and figures about bottle deposit laws, their effects on litter, and recycling of bottles and cans.
